Audit internship at JTT? – Laura and Markus share their experience

Spring 2025 audit trainees speak – Laura and Markus share their experiences!

In the spring our team was joined by four enthusiastic audit trainees who brought a fresh perspective, joy of learning and genuine interest in the field. We interviewed Laura and Markus about the highlights of the internship and what they learned along the way.

How did you hear about JTT's recruitment?

"I first got to know JTT in my second year of studies. Back then I attended a case evening organised by JTT. The place convinced me already then, but in the end I decided to apply for an internship in the autumn of my fourth year. I got a tip about an autumn internship from my fellow students, and our subject association Optimi also let us know that JTT had an internship application open." – Markus

"I heard about it through my subject association Optimi ry." – Laura

What has your work been like this spring?

"During the spring I have mainly audited housing companies. The work has included reviewing the bookkeeping, administration and financial statements. The work surprised me positively with how varied it is. The routine audit procedures became familiar quite quickly, but every engagement is slightly different from the others, so you constantly learn new things. At JTT you're not left alone when practising new things, so there's no need to fear it. I've been able to work with top-class colleagues who are always ready to help." – Markus

"During the spring I've mainly been getting to know the world of housing companies. I have assisted lead auditors with the audits of housing companies' financial statements, bookkeeping and administration. In addition, I've audited real-estate companies and limited companies." – Laura

Biggest realisations during the internship?

"Don't doubt or underestimate your own skills too much. I started my internship with practically no experience of auditing or bookkeeping. Motivation and willingness to learn take you far in many things, and so it is here too!" – Markus

"There have been so many realisations in this spring that it's actually hard to list them. Realisations have included things like the variety and fascination of the audit profession – it's like detective work! In housing-company audits I've realised how housing companies really work and what all kinds of things happen there that residents may not even see, but which are required for the housing company to function. Every client and engagement teaches something new. You shouldn't underestimate your own skills, and even if you don't know something, you can always learn and ask for help." – Laura

How does it feel at the end of the season?

"Feeling pretty good, which may be partly because summer weather is approaching. The season has been very educational and it's great to notice that you can already apply what you've learned in your work. Finally I have to admit it also feels bittersweet. The work has felt nice and the spring has included many audits. The first Monday without audit work may feel strange." – Markus

"Feelings are a little wistful, since the spring at JTT has been really nice and rewarding. The whole team has been supportive and the work has felt meaningful from the very first days. The spring has gone quickly, but it has taught a lot about the audit profession." – Laura

Did the 'audit bug' bite during the spring?

"I heard for the first time at the January onboarding about this previously unknown bug. Back then I thought the only bugs in our home were fruit flies that had hitchhiked in with bananas. Now at the end of the season I have to admit that the audit bug has bitten me too. The work is varied, requires precision and also problem-solving. These are all things I enjoy in my work. Through this internship my interest in the audit profession has grown even further. I plan to do auditing also after this internship." – Markus

"The audit bug has been watching me for a couple of years and yes, it managed to bite me a bit during the spring. I could even later take the auditor qualification!" – Laura

Thanks once again to the whole trainee team for your valuable contribution last spring!
